On Friday, January 18, 2019 the Lee County Chamber co-hosted a Ground Breaking ceremony for the Anchorage Substance Abuse Center’s future Ginny Hayman Memorial Chapel, a structure that has existed as a “vision” for more than two decades. The Center is located at 162 Hampton Lane, Leesburg, (229) 435-5692. The Anchorage focuses on drug and alcohol treatment for men and incorporates Christian teachings into its program. It has space for up to 56 men, but executive director Bob Lynch said there always a waiting list of nearly 40 people. The treatment center costs the men it serves only $40 for a 120-day treatment period. The new, larger chapel will allow The Anchorage to bring GED classes to the center. Currently, the center has to transport residents to another location for the classes. Funding for the chapel, like all the funding for the center itself, came from local donors. The center does not receive any federal or state funding and instead relies on the supportive community. There is not an exact timeline for when the chapel will be complete due to much of the construction coming from people who donated their time and services, they have estimated that it will be complete in the next six months.
